Women's title game draws 2.3
(April 7, 2011) Given the perennial talk about whether women's college hoops needs more parity to broaden its TV appeal, Tuesday night's Texas A&M-Notre Dame NCAA final offered a chance to show how a title game would draw without the usual brand names.
Answer: Maybe teams don't matter all that much. ESPN drew a 2.3 overnight, translating into 2.3% of households in the 56 urban markets used to measure overnights. That's down from 2.6% for last year's Connecticut-Stanford final -- a whopping change of 0.3% of households. Given the women's college basketball ratings are very consistent, and that the sport already gets about as much national TV exposure as a sport can get, the parity issue might be irrelevant. Instead, it seems like women's college hoops has simply stayed in its solid niche for years -- and it might not matter much who's playing in any given game. Read more at
