(March 29, 2011) Bill “The Big Unit” Michaels — one of the most high-profile sports announcers in Milwaukee broadcasting — has left WTMJ-AM (620).

The station issued a press release Tuesday from station manager Steve Wexler stating only that “Michaels and WTMJ were not able to come to terms on a new agreement.”

Wexler is executive vice president of television and radio operations for the station’s owner, Journal Broadcast Group of Milwaukee.

Michaels was at the Milwaukee Brewers spring training in Arizona earlier this week, providing live reports and recorded interviews with players and coaches.

Michaels was WTMJ’s top sports talk show host on “Sports Central,” and was the station’s sports director, according to the station’s website. He also was a commercial spokesman on radio and television for Wisconsin Chevy dealers, among other advertisers.

WTMJ’s announcement said the new hosts of “Sports Central” are former Fox Sports and MLB.TV sports reporter and talk host Trenni Kusnierek and WTMJ’s Greg Matzek, who is morning sports reporter on the station. They will debut on April 4. Kusnierek also has been appearing recently on Milwaukee ESPN Radio affiliate WAUK-AM (540).

Wexler said Kusnierek’s local roots, sports knowledge and “strong broadcast background make her a perfect addition to our sports team.”
