(March 22, 2011) Toby Rowland, a KWTV-9 sports reporter and KREF-AM 1400 morning talk show host, will be named the new University of Oklahoma play-by-play voice, The Oklahoman has learned. An announcement could come as early as this week.
Rowland, who has been sideline reporter on the OU football broadcasts the past two seasons, will replace longtime announcer Bob Barry Sr., who retired after the basketball season. “I have no comment,” Rowland said this morning when reached by telephone. A graduate of Southern Nazarene University, joined KWTV in 1999. He has won several broadcasting honors, including a Regional Emmy award for the 2005 Orange Bowl Blitz. Other candidates for the job included Kansas City Chiefs announcer Mitch Holthus, Washington Nationals baseball announcer Bob Carpenter, who is the play-by-play announcer on OU basketball broadcasts, and OU baseball announcer Chuck Kelly.
