(March 14, 2011) A new morning sports talk radio show will hit the Middle Georgia airwaves starting March 28.

“The Morning Show with Charles Olson and Daniel Shirley” will air from 7-9 a.m. weekdays on WPLA-AM, Fox Sports 1670. It will be the second local daily program for the sports talk radio station, joining the 3-6 p.m. show hosted by Bill Shanks.

“Every morning, we will do our best to get Middle Georgia up to speed as quickly as possible with what is going on in not just sports, but in news, weather and traffic, as well,” Olson said.

The show pairs Olson, a member of “The Bill Shanks Show” and the station’s sports news anchor, with Shirley, a veteran Georgia sports journalist who is the sports editor of The Telegraph.

Shirley, who previously worked at newspapers in Valdosta and Albany and Anderson, S.C., has been with The Telegraph since 2006 and became the sports editor Jan. 1, 2007.

“I’m really excited about the chance to work with Charles and do this show,” Shirley said. “This is something I have wanted to do for years, and it’s going to be a fun time moving forward with the show and focusing on Middle Georgia sports in the morning. Listeners are going to enjoy what we add to their morning.”

Olson, a graduate of Stratford and Florida, previously worked with the Macon Trax hockey team and the Macon Knights indoor football team.

He will continue to work with Shanks and Russ Brown in the afternoon.

“Charles is ready for more responsibility, and he’ll do a great job in the morning,” Shanks said. “Daniel has been on our show and has done other radio segments around the Southeast. Charles and Daniel have filled in on my show and had good chemistry, and they’ll make a good team in the morning.”
