(March 10, 2011) Dave Nitz doesn’t believe in any off seasons.
For the veteran announcer of Louisiana Tech University Radio Sports Network, there is always something to broadcast and he’ll do so again this summer. Yes, right after handling the play-by-play of Bulldogs’ games, Nitz will head northward and serve as the play-by-play announcer for the Sioux City Explorers of the American Association. It will mark the third straight year for him to serve as the “Voice of the Xs.” All 100 of the Explorers’ games will be carried by KSCJ 1300 and via the team’s website at www.xsbaseball.com. “I am pleased to have the opportunity to return to Sioux City for a third season to work with the staff of the Explorers and KSCJ,” said Nitz. “I am looking forward to another great summer of X’s baseball and seeing all of our great fans, while also having an opportunity to work with our new fielder manager, Stan Cliburn.” For the man known to friends as “Freeway Dave” for his love of cruising the nation’s Interstate Highway system, it will mark year No. 30 as a minor league baseball announcer. During that time, he’s been on the airwaves for the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A franchise in Oklahoma City, the San Francisco Giants’ Double-A team in Shreveport, the Baltimore Orioles’ organization in Bluefield, West Va., and with independent squads in Baton Rouge and Shreveport. He’s totaled 36 seasons as the play-by-play announcer for men’s basketball, football and baseball at Tech. In December of 2009, he called Tech game No. 2,000. Earlier in the same year, he was chosen as the Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. “The Sioux City Explorers have been a big part of our summer programming at KSCJ and we are excited to start our 19th season covering X’s baseball,” said KSCJ General Manager Dennis Bullock. ”We are excited to be a part of Stan Cliburn’s first season as field manager and Dave Nitz is a consummate professional and we are looking forward to having him back on the air this season.” Nitz is West Virginia native and graduate of Tech. He and his wife Marlene have three children and six grandchildren and make their home in Haughton, Louisiana. Read more at
