(February 14, 2011) Fox this season will expand its experiment in Saturday prime-time baseball.

In Fox MLB scheduling to be formally announced today, the network has three consecutive Saturday nights of regionalized coverage: May 14, which will feature Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees; May 21, with New York Mets-Yankees; and May 28, with six games — the most MLB games for Fox in a single TV window.

Fox's Saturday afternoon coverage typically features three games. But those six prime-time games May 28, says Fox Sports President Eric Shanks, "will event-ize it."

"This is going back to the days of Baseball Night in America on the Baseball Network," Shanks says, referring to a joint venture involving MLB, NBC and ABC in 1994 and '95 that featured regionalized coverage with lots of games.

After not airing prime-time regular-season baseball since 2004, Fox last season had two MLB Saturday nights, and those ratings were up 40% over afternoon games. Fox's MLB deal precludes other MLB action from airing on TV, so its schedule affects local MLB TV schedules.

So is Fox eventually aiming to shift its MLB coverage from Saturday afternoons to prime time? "It's a discussion between MLB, Fox and clubs about what's the best thing," Shanks says. "We're big fans of prime time."
