(January 14, 2011) In an admittedly random but nonetheless amusing survey from Week 1 of the NFL season, the Wall Street Journal has determined that Kevin Harlan and Solomon Wilcots are the chattiest NFL broadcast duo and Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth are the most spare.
The newspaper analyzed the first 15 minutes of each broadcast in Week 1 and determined that Harlan and Wilcots spoke at a rate of 189.2 words per minute while Michaels and Collinsworth averaged 137.33 wpm. Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf, who did the Texans-Colts game in Week 1, were ninth at 153.67 wpm. Among individual announcers, play-by-play rates ranged from Harlan at 120.9 words per minute to Kenny Albert at 55.4. Among analysts, the range was from Daryl Johnston at 99.3 to Ron Jaworski at 30.4. For historical reference, the newspaper said Pat Summerall and John Madden averaged 118.2 wpm during the first 15 minutes of Super Bowl XXIV. Read more at
