Musburger, Tirico honored
(January 10, 2011) Longtime ESPN and ABC play-by-play announcer Brent Musburger has been elected to the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame, the group announced Friday.
Musburger will be joined by Milwaukee Brewers broadcaster Bob Uecker and Boston Globe sportswriter Bob Ryan in the Class of 2011 and enshrined in May in Salisbury, N.C. ESPN and ABC broadcaster Mike Tirico will also be honored as the 2010 National Sportscaster of the Year. Musburger began his career as a print journalist, following his graduation from Northwestern University. He worked in local TV in Chicago and Los Angeles before becoming a play-by-play announcer for CBS in 1973. Musburger became a studio host for CBS's "The NFL Today" and, eventually, the network's lead play-by-play announcer. He then moved on to ABC and later, ESPN. He will call the BCS National Championship Game on ABC on Monday. Tirico began his sportscasting career as a weekend sports anchor at WTVH in Syracuse, N.Y., while an undergraduate at Syracuse University. He moved on to ESPN, where he serves as play-by-play announcer on "Monday Night Football," as well as ESPN's and ABC's NBA and college football coverage. He also is ABC's lead golf announcer, serves as ESPN's studio host for major events and contributes to ESPN Radio. Read more at
