(December 17, 2010) Appalachian State University associate athletics director and STSAA client David Jackson is one of three finalists for the 2010 North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year award, the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association (NSSA) has announced.

Jackson, who is the play-by-play voice of Appalachian football, men's basketball and baseball, joins Wake Forest's Stan Cotten and NC State's Gary Hahn as finalists for the prestigious award.

A 2000 ASU graduate in his 11th year as the Voice of the Mountaineers, Jackson's nomination puts him in line to become a two-time North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year. He previously earned the recognition in 2007.

Additionally, Tommy Bowman, who covers Appalachian's beat for the Winston-Salem Journal, is one of seven finalists for the North Carolina Sportswriter of the Year award. Bowman has covered ASU athletics since his arrival at the Journal in 1988.

Other finalists include Bowman's fellow Journal reporters Dan Collins and John Dell, Journal columnist Lenox Rawlings, Ed Hardin of the Greensboro News & Record, Bob Sutton of the Burlington Times-News and Dan Weiderer of the Fayetteville Observer.

The winners of the awards are selected by NSSA membership and will be announced early next year. The awards will be presented during the annual NSSA Awards Weekend, set for May 14-16, 2011 in Salisbury, N.C.

"On behalf of Appalachian athletics, I congratulate David and Tommy for being recognized among the best in North Carolina in their respective fields and wish them best of luck in the final vote," ASU director of athletics Charlie Cobb said. "Both are very deserving of the honor and we appreciate their efforts in keeping Mountaineer fans across the world informed about ASU athletics in an entertaining and fair way."
