(December 10, 2010) Play-by-play man for hire: Hall of Fame voice. Extensive experience. Twenty-eight Super Bowls. Well-liked by booth partners. Eager to keep working.

Pat Summerall's streak of calling AT&T Cotton Bowl play-by-play for Fox Sports is over. He did the last four.

But the network will have him at Cowboys Stadium as part of the Jan. 7 pregame coverage, according to a Fox spokesperson Thursday.

The ramped-up production is being dubbed a "run-through for Super Bowl XLV," which will be broadcast Feb. 6, also on Fox.

"Same stadium, no longer a day game (7 p.m.), so it'll have that bigger-event feel," said a Fox spokesperson of the Cotton Bowl.

Many of the extra cameras used for SB XLV coverage will get a dry run at the Texas A&M-LSU matchup.

Kenny Albert and Daryl Johnston, who share the Fox booth for NFL games, will make the historic 75th Cotton Bowl call Jan. 7. Summerall previously worked alongside Brian Baldinger (2007-09) and Johnston (2010).

Chris Rose will host the on-site studio pregame show, and will be joined by Charles Davis and John Lynch.

Summerall, 80, was notified "just recently" by the network that he wouldn't be handling the play-by-play.

"I thought I was going to do it," Summerall said from his Southlake home this week. "[It] wasn't my idea, but that's OK."

In April 2004, Summerall underwent a successful liver transplant. His health is fine, his voice remains rich and his desire to do play-by-play is still there. He has written two books in "retirement."

Summerall recently taped an appearance for the local Fox 4 pregame Super Bowl XLV coverage to be aired Feb. 6, so he stays busy.
