(December 6, 2010) Frank Soden, the longtime broadcasting voice of Richmond’s Triple-A baseball clubs and University of Richmond football and basketball, died Sunday night at 91.

Soden was involved in broadcasts of Richmond Virginians and Richmond Braves baseball games from 1954-84. He worked for more than 30 years as a broadcaster and administrator at UR. He served as the play-by-play man for Spiders basketball on radio from 1950-80 and broadcast football 1969-1980. He also broadcast University of Virginia (1952-54) and Virginia Tech football (1956-68).

He joined the UR staff in 1969 and was an assistant athletic director when he retired in 1984. Soden was very active in community affairs and received honors from the March of Dimes for his humanitarian services, was named a "Volunteer of the Year" by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and was the first recipient of the Sam Dibert Community Service Award by the Commonwealth Catholic Charities.

"Frank could say ‘No’ to no one. He loved his community," said former UR Athletic Director Chuck Boone. "Any time he was asked to do anything in this community, no matter what, he could not say ’No.’ He did so many things for so many organizations."

Soden was inducted into the UR Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997, and two years later was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
