(November 11, 2010) STAA client Joe Lasky has served as the voice of the Canandaigua Braves since 2008, but the Canandaigua resident calls his start in radio an accident.

While attending Finger Lakes Community College in 2006 Finger Lakes News Radio asked him to be a board operator for high school basketball games. Lasky later did play-by-play for two FLCC women’s basketball games for FLTV and that experience helped him land a position as a weekend anchor and play-by-play man for WCGR (104.5 FM).

He currently does play-by-play for Canandaigua football, boys and girls basketball and boys and girls lacrosse.

How did you get interested in radio?
“Growing up near Buffalo, I was always fascinated by the great play-by-play work of Van Miller, Rick Jeanneret and Ted Darling. I was kind of notorious with my friends as a kid because I would always do play-by-play while I was also playing whatever sport we were playing at the time.”

What do you enjoy about calling Braves football games?
“I really enjoy seeing and talking with all the parents and fans on my way in to do a game. I definitely enjoy getting compliments on my work, even from fans of the other team. I really like the overall atmosphere at Evans Field on game days. I also enjoy re-establishing a tradition of broadcasting high school sports on WCGR, just as the Kimble’s used to do way back when. It’s a really cool thing to be able to hear high school sports on the air, especially since there aren’t many stations that broadcast them. Hopefully, whether it’s me calling the games or not by then, when my kids get to high-school age they’ll be able to hear their own names on the radio if they choose to play sports.”

Do you have a favorite game or moment from the 2010 season?
“The second game of the year against Greece Olympia. There were lots of ups and downs in the game. Derick Peters’ game-tying kickoff return for a touchdown was very exciting as was the ebb and flow of the three overtimes. The roar of the crowd when Jacob Spina scored the two-point conversion to win the game and the ensuing dogpile was a lot of fun to see and call.”

How did this season stack up with recent seasons?
“This was by far the most exciting of the three seasons I’ve called so far. In addition to the Greece Olympia game, there was the nailbiter at Greece Athena and the first HF-L game as well. It’s always fun to call tight games.”

How do you think Braves will in 2011?
“They’ve got Peters returning for his senior year, and that’s a great start. If they can improve their passing game and pass defense, they’ve got a shot at hanging with Aquinas and Victor in Class A.”
