NFL sacks baseball in ratingsCourtesy

(October 12, 2010) The Eagles-49ers Sunday night NFL game on NBC produced an 11.7 overnight Nielsen rating, dwarfing the 3.9 number posted by the Phillies-Reds National League Division Series game on TBS.
The SNF rating was 8 percent higher than last week’s Week 5 game (Colts-Titans, 10.8) and continued this season’s trend of highly rated football games. Fox’s single-game coverage received a 12.7, up 20 percent from a year ago (10.6). CBS was down slightly in its early NFL window (8.3 vs. 8.6) and up a bit in the doubleheader game (14.6 vs. 14.3). TBS was averaging a 2.9 rating through Saturday’s Division Series games, a 9 percent drop from last year (3.2). Having baseball’s two biggest draws, the Yankees and Phillies, win in three-game sweeps won’t help the Division Series numbers, but their continuation toward a possible World Series rematch could stablize the numbers for the American League (TBS) and National League (Fox) Championship Series. Meanwhile, the Saturday SEC game on CBS, featuring South Carolina’s upset of No. 1 Alabama, drew a 5.2 metered-market rating, up 73 percent for the corresponding week last year (Alabama-Mississippi, 3.0). Also, Versus reports that its NHL season opener Thursday averaged 730,000 viewers, making it the most-watched NHL regular-season telecast on cable since 2004. Read more at
