(October 6, 2010) First no "College GameDay."

Now this.

ABC, apparently clueless at just how despised the man is 'round here, has announced that Matt Millen will be in the broadcast booth Saturday when Michigan and Michigan State square off in Ann Arbor.

Millen will work alongside play-by-play man Sean McDonough for the rivalry game, which features both teams ranked and undefeated. Quint Kessenich will provide sideline reporting and analysis.

Millen, 52, spent eight years souring his reputation as president and CEO of the Lions. The team never had a winning season during his tenure, which ended early in the 2008 season -- before the team wrapped up its historically bad 0-16 season.

Since his canning, he's bounced around broadcast jobs, from Fox to NBC to, now, ESPN and the NFL Network. He isn't new to Michigan Stadium. He called last September's game between Michigan and Notre Dame, and this year's opener against Connecticut.

Those didn't generate the discussion that this announcement has. But this is different. Many sports fans from Michigan would prefer to enjoy one of the biggest games in this series -- the last time both U-M and MSU entered undefeated was '99 -- without having to listen to analysis from a man who is credited with setting back the state's most popular team, the Lions, years.

Already, one area sports columnist has ripped Millen's assignment. Another has taken to riling up the fans on Facebook.

Earlier this week, the big game was snubbed by ESPN's "College GameDay" crew, which, instead, has chosen to broadcast live Saturday from Columbia, S.C., where South Carolina is set to face top-ranked Alabama.
