(October 5, 2010) “Good afternoon racing fans!”

Those were the words heard from Cleveland broadcaster Van Lane at the start of each of his broadcasts in the 1960s.

Lane passed away Sunday afternoon after talking with his son Todd about the Browns win. He was 89 years old.

Lane was on WEWS in the mid-1950s on the "3 Bears Talent Show," "Magic Touch," "Stump the Sports" and "Vanity Fair."

Van Lane also formed the Thoroughbred Racing Network in 1961 and broadcast to stations all across northern Ohio, including WHK/1420, KYW/1100, WERE/1300 and WJW/850.

He also was the play-by-play voice for the old AHL Cleveland Barons on WDOK/1260, and hosted the Cleveland Indians-oriented “Knothole Gang” show on WEWS.

Lane was born Morris Schecter on Dec. 16, 1920 in Czechoslovakia. His family soon moved to Cleveland.

His broadcasting journey and life story is posted on www.vanlane.com .

He got into management at Booth Broadcasting and United Broadcasting until he retired in 1989. He later worked as a consultant for WELW/1330.

Lane’s funeral will be held on Friday. It will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. at Mt. Sinai Cemetery in Mayfield Village.
