TBS sets MLB playoff lineup
(October 4, 2010) TBS, which Wednesday begins airing all first-round MLB playoff games, ended up avoiding any scheduling snafus. How it shook out:
•Wednesday: The New York Yankees are MLB's biggest TV draw —duh!— so you start by placing them in the opening night primetime slot (8:30 p.m. ET) in playing at Minnesota Wednesday. Logically, they get TBS' top MLB announcing team —Ernie Johnson, Ron Darling andJohn Smoltz. Then, it follows that the Philadelphia Phillies— a big draw given the team made the World Series the past two years and were dominant this season — get the next best slot to host Cincinnati (5 p.m. ET). That series will get announcers who call local TV games for National League teams during the regular season in Brian Anderson (Milwaukee) and Joe Simpson(Atlanta). Which leaves Tampa Bay-Texas in the remaining slot (1:30 p.m. ET) with announcers who call regulars-season games for American League teams in Don Orsillo (Boston) and Buck Martinez (Toronto). •Thursday: Atlanta at San Francisco, called by Dick Stockton and Bob Brenly, starts at 9:30 p.m. to accommodate the West Coast time zone — leaving Yankees at Twins with a less-than-marquee start at 6 p.m. ET. And Texas-Tampa Bay stays in the early game slot (2:30 p.m. ET). •Friday and Saturday: As each announcing team stays with its series, an NL doubleheader Friday has Reds-Phillies (6 p.m. ET) as a lead-in to the Atlanta-San Francisco late game (9:30 p.m. ET). Saturday's AL doubleheader follows the obvious logic: Rays-Rangers as an undercard (5 p.m. ET) to the main event — Twins-Yankees (8:30). Read more at
