(September 27, 2010) Darren Smith will take over the more prestigious afternoon drive-time slot from Lee Hamilton starting Oct. 4 when XX Sports Radio unveils its new fall schedule.

Hamilton, who is close to finalizing a new contract with the all-sports station, has been in the late-afternoon spot in San Diego for most of the last 23 years. But his show now will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., following the morning show with Scott Kaplan and Billy Ray Smith, which will start at 6 a.m. (one hour later than its current start time).

Darren Smith, working with producer and sidekick Marty Caswell, will be on the air from 2-6 p.m., with John Kentera working from 6-9 p.m.

XX Sports always undergoes a schedule shift at the end of baseball season, but the change will be more radical than usual this year due to the departure of Jim Rome, whose syndicated show is moving to XTRA Sports 1360 starting Oct. 4.

There could be more changes on the way at XX Sports. Discussions are ongoing regarding bringing ESPN Radio to sister station San Diego 1700-AM. If that happens, XX Sports might be able to simulcast the ESPN programming during late-night and overnight hours, as well as on weekends.

Meanwhile, XTRA 1360 has named Charod Williams co-host of its afternoon (3-7 p.m.) talk show with Josh Rosenberg. Williams replaces Jeff Dotseth, who resigned a few weeks ago to enter private business.
