(September 24, 2010) How you doing, everybody?
Today we're with our old tag-team partner Chet Coppock. Chet, the calendar says you're 62, but you're still as frisky as the day Mick Jagger first belted out "Jumpin' Jack Flash." OK, enough Chet-speak. I caught up with Mr. Coppock this week. As always, it was an interesting conversation. Mr. Coppock is re-inventing himself for about the 80th time in his career. He has bounced back from last year's Webio debacle; he co-hosted an afternoon show until the station imploded when it was revealed David Hernandez financed it through a Ponzi scheme. It's a good thing Mr. Coppock has a big head because he is wearing many hats these days. He continues to works the studio for the Notre Dame games on WLS-AM/890. He relishes reminiscing with former players on the "Heritage Series" that runs on the various Blackhawks outlets. "Right now, the Hawks are like Elvis Presley in concert," he said, a vintage Chet line. Mr. Coppock, though, isn't living in the past. He is embracing new media with gusto. He is involved with mymvps.com, a high school and amateur sports site. This week, he will be at the Mount Carmel-De La Salle game. "I've forgotten how fun high school games can be," he said. Mr. Coppock also is a Facebook fanatic, posting constantly. Now he plans to take it to another level. He is building a studio at his home. Soon, he will be posting a "Daily Coppock" video report. "I love the simplicity of social media," he said. "You can go from five minutes to infinity. It takes me infinity to say hello. You won't get rich off social media, but it's fun." Mr. Coppock's activities also include being a senior sports adviser for the Illinois Center For Broadcasting. Slowing down? At 62, Mr. Coppock insists he's just getting started. "The most foreign word in my vocabulary is 'retirement,' " he said. "I'm having a ball. I'm busier than ever. Most guys at 62 want that like they want malaria. I thrive on that. I'm beating the posse. I'm going to work until they cart me out of here." Read more at
