(September 13, 2010) Ron Menchine, the last radio "Voice of the Senators," has died at the age of 76.

I (author Phil Wood) knew Ron well, though not during the years he was in the Senators' radio booth at RFK. I got to know him in 1974 at a dinner party in suburban Philadelphia, and his passion for baseball even then was palpable. He introduced me to the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), and educated me on the better baseball collectibles. We shared many meals over the years, and traveled to several out-of-town sports collector's conventions.

Ron was a proud University of Maryland graduate, and made his home in Baltimore County. His call of the final Senators' game on September 30, 1971, was a classic, as he unrelentingly ripped owner Bob Short - and the other AL owners who approved the move - throughout the broadcast. His final soliloquy as the fans stormed the field invoked the names of the great Washington players of the past, and has been replayed countess times on local airwaves.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
