(August 24, 2010) Chris Tunis, a longtime, award-winning sports broadcaster who did lengthy stints at KSL and KALL, died Monday of cancer. He was 54.

Tunis was the Utah women’s basketball team’s play-by-play announcer for the past decade and also did the postgame call-in show after Utah football games.

Prior to that, he worked from 1982-93 for KSL in a variety of capacities on both radio and television, including sports editor for the station’s radio side and sports director for television.

“Chris was one of those people who was not only a consummate pro, but one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, which gets harder and harder to find in this business,” said KALL sports program director Bill Riley, who called Tunis a pioneer in sports talk radio in the Salt Lake City market.

Tunis was a seven-time Utah Sportscaster of the Year recipient.

After leaving KSL, Tunis joined the Enterprise Newspaper Group as an account representative, eventually becoming publisher of the company’s Wasatch Front Focus publication. But also he continued to work as a broadcaster.

“Even when it wasn’t his full-time job anymore, he still loved doing radio,” Riley said. “That’s kind of rare these days.”

Tunis is survived by his wife, Julie, and his daughter, Jacqueline. Funeral services are pending.
