ESPN searching for new San Diego homeCourtesy

(August 20, 2010) It's going away at the end of the month, and judging from the numbers, the vast majority of you won't mourn the loss of ESPN Radio (98.9-FM) in San Diego.
The Mexican-owned station has been operating in some form for the past eight years and has failed to make an impact. For the month of July, XX Sports 1090 had 301,000 listeners and averaged a solid 2.4. ESPN Radio posted a 0.5 rating with 95,000 listeners. XTRA Sports 1360 also had a 0.5 rating, but with 63,000 listeners. XTRA should be helped by the addition of a noon-3 p.m. local show featuring Ben Higgins. XTRA's numbers have probably been hurt by the success of the Padres with fans tuning into 1090 with regularity for games. But XTRA's 3-4 p.m. "Chargers Power Hour" with Josh Rosenberg and Jeff Dotseth should pick up steam as the NFL season draws near. That show leads into "The Drive" with Rosenberg and Dotseth. ESPN Radio had no local shows. The ESPN Radio lineup includes Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg from 3-7 a.m., Colin Cowherd from 7-10 a.m., Scott Van Pelt from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Doug Gottlieb from 1-4 p.m., "Football Tonight" from 4-5 p.m. with Brian Kenney and Jason Smith working the night shifts. The thing listeners will miss if ESPN Radio isn't replaced is play-by-play. The ESPN Radio play-by-play lineup includes NFL's "Monday Night Football," Major League Baseball's Sunday night broadcasts, MLB playoff and World Series games, NBA games and college football. "We're optimistic we're going to get back in the San Diego market soon," said ESPN Radio spokesman Dan Quinn. "We're talking to all interested parties. Obviously, we want to be in San Diego." The landing spots could include 1090, 1700 or 1360. Both 1090 and 1360, however, have national affiliates -- 1090 with Sporting News Radio and 1360 with Fox Sports Radio. ESPN officials would like to have something worked out in San Diego by the start of the NFL regular season, which starts the second week of September, and the baseball playoffs, which start the first week of October.
