Fresno station adds sports on weekends

(August 17, 2010) The Beach Boys are out and the Oakland Raiders are in on KMJ FM's weekend lineup.

Ever since the radio station (FM 105.9) switched to a weekday talk/news format in March 2009, the weekend lineup has been '60s and '70s music. Sports takes over Sept. 4 with a new locally-produced sports talk program, top national college football games and the full Oakland Raiders NFL schedule.

KMJ operations manager Skip Essick says the mix of news/talk during the week and music on the weekends created a dual identity. He says the sports lineup--aimed at the predominantly male audience that tunes in during the week to hear Glenn Beck and Mark Levin--will be a better match.

The change can't hurt the ratings much as KMJ FM ranked 24 out of 32 stations in spring Arbitron radio ratings with a 1.1 share. In case you're wondering, there will be no changes to sister station KMJ (AM 580), the top-rated station in the market.

"We will start a local sports show on Saturday mornings--from 7-9 a.m. --that we haven't picked a name for yet. But it will be hosted by Steve Gonzalez," Essick says. Gonzalez is part of KMJ's sports team that also includes Paul Loeffler and Alexan Balekian. "It will be followed by a syndicated show called Cigar Dave from 9-11 a.m. It's all about cigars, fine wines and other politically incorrect things."

The station's new lineup of top college football games starts Sept. 5 -- yes, a Sunday -- with Texas Tech and SMU. Essick's plan is to continue the college sports lineup into the basketball season.

KMJ FM's Oakland Raiders broadcasts start Sept 12 with the game against the Tennessee Titans.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg for us and sports on KMJ FM," says Essick who's still working on the new schedule.
