(July 22, 2010) Ballplayers aren't the only ones with major league dreams.

That's been the goal of Fresno Grizzlies broadcaster Doug Greenwald -- son of the former voice of the Giants Hank Greenwald -- for most of his 35 years on this planet.

"My whole life, having grown up in the game, I haven't known life any other way than being around the ballpark," he said before Wednesday's game at Chukchansi Park.

The San Francisco Giants will give Greenwald a taste of The Show during this weekend's series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Greenwald was called up to fill in for Jon Miller on KNBR radio for Giants games Friday through Sunday. Miller will be in Cooperstown, N.Y., at his induction into the broadcasters wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

"It's like I'm pinch-hitting for Ted Williams," Greenwald joked.

Miller is taking sidekick Dave Flemming with him to Cooperstown, so Greenwald will do the play-by-play with J.T. Snow providing color commentary.

"I'm excited like any ballplayer to go up," said Greenwald, who has been describing Grizzlies games on the radio for eight years. "And I'm thankful to the Giants and Grizzlies for giving me this chance.

Greenwald worked one Giants game in Milwaukee last September and teamed with Miller for an exhibition game in 2008. He also has been the Internet play-by-play voice of the Giants the past five spring trainings.

"I owe a lot to Jon. He's been a mentor," Greenwald said. "He's listened to my work and has never been afraid to pull me aside or send an e-mail making suggestions in a good way."

Greenwald will head to Arizona today to familiarize himself with the ballpark and the teams before he goes on the air. Guy Haberman, who has worked with Greenwald the past three years, will call today's Grizzlies game and the first three on the Reno road trip that starts Friday. Greenwald will rejoin him Monday for the series finale.

"I couldn't be more excited to be doing games," Haberman said. "My only disappointment is I can't listen to Doug and watch my game at the same time."

This is Greenwald's 15th year as a professional baseball broadcaster. His career began in 1996 with the Bend (Oregon) Bandits of the independent Western Baseball League and he has steadily worked his way up the affiliated minor leagues.

He also spent time with Class-A Stockton and Modesto in the California League, two years at Double-A Shreveport and one winter in Hawaii with the West Oahu CaneFires.
