(July 14, 2010) Pretty much everyone who listens to sports talk radio assumes he or she could also be a host.
How hard can it be? You give your opinions on sports and you take calls. So WFAN (660 AM) is giving listeners a chance this month to learn that it's not quite that easy. The station is holding open auditions for civilians, one of whom, at the end, will earn an on-air shift. It's not impossible. WFAN's Joe Benigno got his start through a similar contest 15 years ago. Still, cautions WFAN program director Mark Chernoff, "It's not as simple as it seems. What we find is a lot of people who are really good callers and have a passion for sports, but discover that's a lot different from knowing how to host a whole show. "For the auditions, we ask people to do two minutes. Some of them walk off the stage after 45 seconds because they can't even fill that much time." Read more at
