Butler basketball moves to The FanCourtesy
Indianapolis Star
(June 30, 2010) Moving to the top sports radio station in Indianapolis is the latest evidence of the impact of Butler's Final Four run.
The agreement announced Tuesday puts Butler men's basketball on WFNI-1070 AM, which has the strongest signal of Indy's all-sports radio stations. Beyond broadcasting games, 1070 The Fan, as the station is called, will use its daytime sports-talk shows to promote Butler. "It means that more fans than ever before will be able to listen to Butler games," said Butler athletic director Barry Collier, who made the announcement along with Emmis Communications vice president Charlie Morgan. "The connection between 1070 The Fan and Butler will be a great thing in all that we do." Neither Collier nor Morgan would discuss details other than to say it is a multiyear deal that will be beneficial to both parties. Collier credited associate athletic director Mike Freeman and director of corporate sponsorship Joe Gentry with spearheading the initial conversations. Morgan said a statewide Butler radio network in the future is "possible to imagine." Collier said the benefits of the Bulldogs' Final Four run have been a record incoming freshman class, more corporate partners, donations that have spiked "significantly" and an expectation of more season ticket sales. "We're really excited to join up with 1070 The Fan," coach Brad Stevens said. "As we continue to try to build our brand and grow our brand recognition across the state, nationally and globally, certainly this partnership is a big deal for us." WFNI is a 50,000-watt station. Butler broadcasts had been on WXNT-1430 AM, a 5,000-watt station. Since the Indiana Pacers are on WIBC-93.1 FM and Indiana University is on WLHK-97.1 FM, Butler likely will not be pre-empted. The Bulldogs were the 2010 national runner-up, losing to Duke in the title game, and saw sophomore forward Gordon Hayward, a Brownsburg, Ind., native, picked ninth in last week's NBA draft. "For our university, the exposure has been unbelievable," Collier said. "We don't miss the fact that we are sitting with Charlie today and our basketball team is moving to the sports leader in Indianapolis. This is a huge thing for us." Thank you to the
