(June 28, 2010) The U.S. soccer team's loss to Ghana in the World Cup on ABC Saturday drew a national rating of 8.2%, making it the third highest-rated men's Cup game ever on U.S. TV. Only the U.S.-Brazil quarterfinal when the U.S. hosted the Cup in 1994, which drew 9.3% of U.S. households, and the 1994 Italy-Brazil 1994 final, which drew 9.5%, were higher-rated men's Cup games.

The 1999 U.S.-China final in the women's World Cup remains the highest-rated Cup game ever on U.S. TV. It drew 11.4% of U.S. households.

San Diego, which drew the highest local TV ratings for previous U.S. team games in this World Cup, also drew the highest local TV rating for Saturday's game — 15.4%. The second highest-rated market for U.S.-Ghana: Washington, D.C., where the game drew 13.8% of households.

The rating for Saturday's U.S.-Ghana game was also up 11% from the much-hyped U.S.-England tie in the Cup two weeks ago.

So far in this Cup, games on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC are averaging 1.8% of U.S. households, up 48% from coverage of the 2006 World Cup. Finals Cup ratings, however, are unlikely to surpass viewing levels for the U.S.-hosted 1994 Cup.
