Dolphins adding Stockton as preseason voice

(June 25, 2010) Look for the Dolphins to announce next month that they have hired longtime network announcer Dick Stockton as their new play-by-play voice for preseason games on WFOR-CBS 4.

Stockton, who lives in Boca Raton, would be a significant upgrade over Craig Bolerjack, who was not asked to return. Bolerjack, a Utah Jazz announcer, was error-prone and displayed limited knowledge about the Dolphins, and it made no sense for the team to fly him in from Salt Lake City to call their preseason games for the past four years. Bolerjack had succeeded the capable Brad Nessler, who relinquished the preseason job because of ABC college football conflicts.

Bob Griese and Nat Moore will remain the analysts on the preseason package. None of the Dolphins' preseason games were picked up by a national network, meaning WFOR-4 will air all four -- home on Aug. 14 against Tampa Bay and on Aug. 27 against Atlanta, Aug. 21 at Jacksonville and Sept. 2 at Dallas.

Stockton has as impressive a résumé as anyone announcing a local preseason package. He has called NFL games on network TV for 32 years -- 1978 to 1993 with CBS, and since 1994 with Fox, where he also announces Major League Baseball. Stockton, CBS' lead NBA voice in the 1980s, also works NBA and MLB games for Turner.

He hasn't done preseason games the past two years, but previously worked the Redskins' package for eight years and Ravens' package for six.

His wife, CBS reporter Lesley Visser, will continue to contribute to preseason Dolphins telecasts. Stockton and the Dolphins declined to comment because his hiring hasn't been announced.
