(June 7, 2010) Kevin Harlan appears to be the leading candidate to replace Marv Albert, who took himself out of the job as the play-by-play voice on "Monday Night Football" for Westwood One Radio.

Boomer Esiason, Albert's analyst partner on those broadcasts, broke the news on his New York radio show on Friday.

Albert, who will turn 69 on Saturday, told Esiason he wanted to cut back on his schedule and travel demands.

Albert is the lead announcer for TNT's NBA game telecasts, and he handles New Jersey Nets games for the YES Network.

The vice president and executive producer of Westwood One, Howard Deneroff, told Fanhouse.com that he intends to "look into every possibility" in order to find a replacement for Albert.

The transition to Harlan would be smooth one because he worked games for Westwood One in 2009. Harlan called 11 NFL games for CBS-owned radio network, including the playoffs. Harlan, who turns 50 on June 21, is the son of Bob Harlan, the former chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Green Bay Packers.

"We have been in talks," Kevin Harlan told the Journal Sentinel when he was reached by telephone Saturday morning. Harlan declined to comment further.

In the games he worked for Westwood One in 2009, Harlan worked with three different analysts - Esiason, the regular analyst on Monday night games, Warren Moon and Randy Cross.

Harlan, who was born in Milwaukee, calls NFL games and college basketball games for CBS-TV. His partner on NFL broadcasts on CBS last season was Solomon Wilcots, andthey are listed fourth on the CBS roster of NFL announcing teams. Harlan and Rich Gannon in recent years have called Green Bay Packers pre-season games, which are broadcast to a statewide audience.

Harlan also handles play-by-play for National Basketball Association games on TNT.

Before joining Westwood One's Monday night NFL package last year, Harlan called Westwood One's Final Four men's college basketball games.

Albert was the voice of "Monday Night Football" for eight years, since 2002. He replaced Howard David, who used to be the radio voice of the Milwaukee Bucks.
