Lloyd Pettit: the best there ever was

(May 28, 2010) In 1999, I did a media column for the Chicago Tribune ranking my favorite announcers of the 20th century. In the end, there only was one choice in my book: Lloyd Pettit.

For me and many other old-time hockey fans, Mr. Pettit was our link to the Blackhawks in the '60s and '70s. He did the Hawks road games on TV. But it was on radio where he really shined.

His rich voice and vivid descriptions made the game come alive from the Chicago Stadium. Hockey is an incredibly fast sport, but thanks to Mr. Pettit's calls, you were able to see all of it clearly in your mind.

Put yourself in the mood for the Stanley Cup finals by listening to some of Mr. Pettit's classic calls. Thanks to my brother Scott for passing along a 10-minute YouTube clip of Mr. Pettit at his best.

The calls include Bobby Hull's 500th goal, in which Lou Boudreau climbs into the penalty box to interview Mr. Hull; Mr. Hull's record-setting 27th Hat Trick; and the 1971 playoffs and Stanley Cup finals.

I'll admit to getting chills in listening to Mr. Pettit again. Perhaps it takes me back to a time when all you needed to enjoy hockey was a radio and Mr. Pettit's voice.

Shortly after writing the piece in 1999, I received a short thank-you note from Mr. Pettit. I was thrilled that he actually saw the story and took the time to write.

We all owe a big thanks to Lloyd Pettit. Listen to the clip and enjoy.
