ESPN puts more kick into World Cup
(May 26, 2010) ESPN, for its upcoming World Cup soccer coverage, has only one American —John Harkes— among the eight analysts or play-by-play announcers on games.
Harkes, on the 1990 and 1994 U.S. World Cup squads, will call all U.S. matches — starting with British announcer Martin Tyler on USA-England on June 12. Harkes will call USA-Slovenia on June 18 with British announcer Ian Darke. Harkes' partner for the third and final guaranteed U.S. game — vs. Algeria on June 23 — has not been named because after June 22, said ESPN's Mike Soltys, assignments will be drawn based on "meritocracy." While ESPN announcers in 2006 called about 20 Cup games off TV monitors in ESPN's Bristol, Conn., studios, all ESPN game announcers will be on-site in South Africa. ESPN plans to give unprecedented hype to its Cup coverage — including 24 consecutive hours of Cup programming leading into the June 11 South Africa-Mexico opener. And how's this for ESPN incorporating the U.S. team into its hype: The team's roster — with all 23 players on hand — will be announced on-air from ESPN's Bristol studios today about 1 p.m. ET.
