Mike & Mike win in Houston

(May 24, 2010) This is a pretty uninspired time for local sports on the field, so perhaps it’s no surprise that ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike Show on KFNC (97.5 FM) leapfrogged into first place among sports talkers in Arbitron’s Houston morning drive radio ratings for April in men 25-54.

KFNC leads by a tenth of a point in average quarter-hour share over KGOW (1560 AM) and by two-tenths over KILT (610 AM) in morning drive, although KILT’s weekly cumulative audience beats KFNC and KGOW combined. KBME (790 AM) is fourth among local sports stations in that time period. Once again, however, all four combined account for only 5 percent of the audience in the key demo, less than the top four music stations in the market each manage on their own.

KFNC’s mixture of ESPN Radio and Fred Faour’s local show also leads among sports stations at midday, followed by KILT, KGOW and KBME. KILT leads KBME in afternoon drive (the four sports talkers account for just 4.3 percent of the audience, although it gets closer to morning drive levels if you add in Ralph Cooper’s show on KCOH), and also leads at night and in the Monday-Sunday ratings among men 25-54.

Among persons 12-plus, the only demo in which Arbitron allows numbers to be cited, KILT ranks 27th with a 0.7 audience share and 179,200 weekly listeners, KFNC is 28th with a 0.6 share and 102,300 cume, KBME is tied for 34th with a 0.4 share and 128,200 cume and KGOW is tied for 36th with a 0.3 share and 41,100 cume.

For comparison purposes, KODA (99.1 FM) is ranked No. 1 in 12-plus with a 7.6 Monday-Sunday share and 1.95 million weekly listeners. Among AM signals, KTRH (740 AM) leads with a 3.9 share and 627,000 cume.
