Tim McKernan moving to KFNSCourtesy
St. Louis Post Dispatch
(May 19, 2010) Tim McKernan, ringmaster of the top-rated local morning drive-time sports-talk radio show, is taking the program back to its roots.
McKernan, along with partners Jim Hayes and Doug Vaughn, will move from KSLG (1380 AM) to KFNS (590 AM) June 14 — three years to the day McKernan left amid much angst. But 590 is about to come under new ownership and McKernan said he has exercised a clause in his 1380 deal that allows him to terminate that arrangement with 30 days' notice. So the show's last day there is set for June 11 as the jock-talk merry-go-round continues to spin. "You can't ever rule anything out in the inbreeding that is sports-talk radio in any market,'' said McKernan, whose show will keep its current schedule —live from 7-10 a.m. with taped fare starting at 6. This will cause a juggling of 590's schedule. Martin Kilcoyone, who has anchored the morning-drive show that includes Maurice Drummond and Rich Gould, will shift to 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and team with Frank Cusumano — with whom he currently works for an hour. "In all of my years in radio I have never received as much positive feedback about a show as we have gotten with the Frank and Martin combo,'' said KFNS general manager Dave Greene, who leads a group that's in the process of buying the station. "I would put the five guys we will have (on those two shows) .... up against any lineup that has ever been put together in this market.'' As has been the case at 1380, McKernan's company, insideSTL Enterprises LLC (which operates insidestl.com), will control that time frame his show airs as well as a second block — which will be 1-3 p.m. on 590. McKernan said it hasn't been determined who will man the latter slot that currently is occupied by the final hour of the show featuring Jeff Gordon and Jeff Vernetti and is followed by an hour of "speciality" programming that rotates daily. McKernan said the fact 1380 has been offered for sale was not a big factor in the move, simply that he feels 590 — which reaches farther into the key western suburbs — offers a better opportunity. "It's in the best interest of the show, it's in the best interest of this (insidelstl.com) business,'' he said. "I like the offer from 590, it's a better deal than we have now. Unlike leaving 590 in 2007, when I was running to leave, this is bittersweet because (1380 general manager) John Helmkamp is one of the finest people for whom I've ever worked. A good character person, and my feelings on that won't ever change." _______________________
