(May 14, 2010) Though Fox made a push for rights, incumbent ABC/ESPN is expected to retain the primary Atlantic Coast Conference football and basketball packages if negotiations can be finalized. ``We're optimistic,'' ESPN spokesperson Josh Krulewitz said. Fox's proposal included some football games on Fox, but more on Fox Sports Net.

The ACC's contracts with ABC/ESPN, Fox Sports Net (basketball only) and Raycom expire next year and reportedly are worth about $70 million annually. The ACC wants its per-year revenue to increase to $120 million or so, but the value of the football package has been hurt by the dearth of serious national championship contenders in recent years.

By contrast, the Southeastern Conference's 15-year arrangements with CBS and ESPN are worth $200 million per year.

Consider that CBS last season drew a higher rating with its SEC football package (a 4.4) than ABC did with its regional mix of Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, Pacific-10 and some Big East games (a 3.9 rating).

The primary reason: Florida and Alabama were in the national title hunt through November, and undefeated teams draw eyeballs. ``The fact we beat ABC with one conference is remarkable,'' CBS Sports president Sean McManus said. ``It's satisfying to pay the rights to one conference and produce one game a week and go against four or five games and four or five rights payments'' and win.
