(May 5, 2010) Youngstown State Associate Director of Athletics Rick Love and ClearChannel Youngstown General Manager Bill Kelly announced on Tuesday that former Michigan standout and Super Bowl Champion Ed W. Muransky has joined Penguin Sports Radio football broadcasts as a color analyst.

Muransky, a native of Youngstown who graduated from Cardinal Mooney, joins veteran play-by-play voice Bob Hannon, sideline reporter Dave Sess and engineer Mike Orto on the YSU football broadcasts, which are part of ClearChannel Youngstown on NewsRadio 570 WKBN.

“Ed is a quality individual and is very well respected in the Mahoning Valley community,” Love said. “His vast knowledge of the game and his personality will give us a very strong broadcast team as we embark on the first year of the Coach Eric Wolford era.”

Kelly said the addition of Muransky will give perspective that will enhance the entire YSU radio experience.

“We have one of the best broadcast tandems at the FCS level with the addition of Ed,” Kelly said. “He is a sharp person who has great ties and respect in the area. He knows football extremely well and will provide great insight to the broadcasts.”

Muransky has an impressive football and business background. The Chairman of the Board and Founder of the Muransky Companies, he is also Founder, Chairman, CEO and majority owner of the Surgical Hospital at Southwoods in Boardman. He serves as Founder, Chairman and CEO of Chestnut Land Company, the holding company for Auntie Anne’s Soft Pretzel franchises operating throughout the United States.

On the gridiron, Muransky excelled as a student-athlete at Michigan and went on to win a Super Bowl ring with the Oakland Raiders in 1984 (Super Bowl XVIII). While with the Wolverines, he was a three-year starter as an offensive lineman. As a senior in 1981, he was a consensus All-American and earned Academic All-America recognition. He was an All-American selection in 1980 as a junior. Michigan won the 1981 Rose Bowl with him starting as an offensive tackle.

“I am very excited to join Bob and Dave as the YSU football program begins to get back to the Championship level under Coach Wolford,” Muransky said. “YSU Athletics and ClearChannel Youngstown are two first-class operations and being associated with them is something I am looking forward to.”

He currently lives in Poland with his wife Christine. They have three children: Eddie, a graduate of the University of Michigan law school, Deloran, a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and Donielle, a junior at Washington University in St. Louis.

In other football broadcast news, former Penguin quarterback Jeff Ryan will be the color analyst for the MyYTV broadcasts joining play-by-play man Chad Krispinsky in the booth. Ryan was a standout quarterback for the Penguins from 1998-2001 and set numerous school records during his career. He was the quarterback when the Guins last reached the FCS Championship Game in 1999. Ryan, a second-team all-conference selection in 2001, set the school mark for career touchdown passes and still holds the single-season mark for passing yards (2,573 yards in 1999) and rushing yards by a quarterback (638 in 1999).

Ryan, who is currently employed by Boston Scientific as a Territory Manager, served as a Quality Control Coach for YSU Head Coach Jim Tressel at Ohio State when the Buckeyes won the National Championship in 2002. He received his MBA from Ashland in 2008 and is married to former YSU soccer player Kate McHugh. They have two daughters, Ella (four) and Sophia (two).

Ryan will serve as an occasional sideline reporter on football broadcasts and will join the Fifth Quarter Postgame Show on 570 WKBN.

Hannon returns for his 20th season of play-by-play duties while Sess is back as the sideline reporter for the eighth consecutive campaign.
