(April 30, 2010) Brewers radio broadcaster Bob Uecker underwent successful heart surgery Friday in Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital, the team announced.

The procedure lasted six hours. Uecker will now remain hospitalized for about five to seven days, and a full recovery is expected to take 10-12 weeks, the release stated.

"As of 2:30 pm [CT], Bob is out of surgery and in the ICU," said Dr. Alfred Nicolosi, who performed the surgery. "We are pleased that Mr. Uecker's surgery went smoothly today. We replaced his aortic valve, aortic root and part of his ascending aorta. We also did a coronary bypass on one vessel."

During the Brewers' road trip, Uecker's radio partner, Cory Provus, will handle play-by-play, and Fox Sports Wisconsin's Davey Nelson will provide analysis. After the trip, the Brewers and the team's flagship radio station, WTMJ-AM, will review its options for the remainder of Uecker's absence.

Uecker also had surgery in 1991 to repair two abdominal aortic aneurysms and made a full recovery in about five weeks. That's the longest he has been away from baseball since his hometown Milwaukee Braves signed him in 1956.

Dr. Jim Kleczka still needs to determine whether additional bypass surgery is necessary.

"On behalf of the entire Brewers organization, we are relieved to know that Bob's surgery went as planned, and we look forward to his complete and speedy recovery," Brewers chairman and principal owner Mark Attanasio said in a statement. "I know Bob appreciates just how eager Brewer fans are to hear his wit, passion, and knowledge of baseball, as well as all things Milwaukee -- since listening to him is such a big part of our summers. Get well, Bob."

Added son, Bob Uecker Jr.: "Our family is thrilled with the outcome of today's surgery. We're grateful to the staff at Froedtert for their medical and professional care. They have been terrific every step of the way. We also want to thank our extended family, friends and all of the fans who have expressed their concern for my father. We appreciate their thoughtful and kind wishes."
