(April 21, 2010) WGR-AM sports utility man Nick Mendola is leaving the station and joining rival WECK-AM.

Mendola had several roles at WGR. He was a sports host, producer, reporter, worked on the website and created comedy bits. He will be an evening sports talk host at WECK on nights that the New York Yankees aren't playing and after the season is over. A University at Buffalo graduate, Mendola also will be part of WECK broadcasts of UB football and UB women's basketball.

He had given his two weeks' notice last week. However, Mendola worked the station's 10 a.m. to noon time slot during the Buffalo Sabres playoff run. This morning, former Sabre goaltender Marty Biron was his guest. Mendola said WGR declined to match WECK's financial and work schedule offer and shut him out of its website shortly after he finished his show with Biron today.

"It's a great opportunity," said Mendola of joining WECK. "It is really nice to be believed in by a station that not only has embraced my alma mater but independently has embraced the city."
