TNT, ESPN unveil toys for NBA playoffs

(April 14, 2010) As the NBA playoffs debut this weekend with eight games on TNT and ESPN/ABC, TNT's Charles Barkley suggests there's not much suspense. Since the Cleveland Cavaliers are the best team and the Orlando Magic are second-best, he says, the NBA title will be decided in the Eastern Conference finals: "The Cavaliers are going to win the whole thing. …Orlando is terrific, and when those teams play in the conference finals it's going to be a flat-out war!"

He's not saying that just to hype that series: It would be on ESPN; TNT has Western Conference finals.

New wrinkles on TNT's coverage include a "definitive look-cam" above the three-point line, to see if shooters are outside the arc, on at least 30 games. The Turner-produced NBA TV channel will also debut 60-minute condensed game replays. And on Turner-managed NBA.com — which in the past year streamed 1 billion videos, up 65% from the previous year — every postgame press conference will be streamed live.

ESPN/ABC, for the first time on the NBA playoffs, will use the technology that converts live interviews with players at games into studio sit-downs with holograms of those players. Why bother? Because the technology is there.
