(April 12, 2010) KCTV5 and My-KSMO TV have announced that it will be expanding its local sports coverage with the hiring of Michael Coleman as the stations' new sportscaster.

Coleman, a native of Lawrence and a graduate of Southern Illinois, will anchor the sports in the early evening and nightly newscasts. He will also anchor a new half-hour sports show called, "Off the Bench," which will debut at 10:30 p.m. on April 25 on KCTV5.

The new show will bring Kansas City viewers a comprehensive look into all area sports. The first program will have extensive coverage of the NFL draft.

“Being from the Midwest, I realize how passionate people are about their local sports, from high school to the pros,” said Bobby Totsch, vice president and general manager. “The viewers in the Kansas City area have told us they love their sports, and we made a decision to get right back into the mix by bringing a quality sports personality back to KCTV to tell the local sports story.

“KCTV and KSMO bring quality sports to our viewers -- KSMO with KU basketball, and KCTV with not only a solid majority of all the Chiefs games, but the quality sports that CBS offers us every year. It simply makes sense for us to be a leader in local sports coverage once again. Michael Coleman will do that for us. Simply put, we want what our viewers want.”

Coleman worked most recently as the sports director at News 12 in New York. KCTV5, My-KSMO and CBS bring Kansas City the some of the top sports programming in the area with Chiefs football, KU basketball, NCAA basketball, college football, and the Masters golf tournament.
