(April 6, 2010) A trial for a former TV and radio broadcaster for the Gators, set to start this week, was postponed when his attorney filed paperwork saying he plans to enter a plea in the case.

Steven Michael Babik, 50, is facing charges in federal court for receipt and distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography. He made a first court appearance in the case in January when he pleaded not guilty.

Babik "knowingly received, distributed and possessed materials depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct" on several occasions from Nov. 2 to Nov. 30, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Florida. Investigators initially reported he was arrested as part of an ongoing effort to prosecute people who share child pornography online.

In a motion to reschedule Babik's trial, his attorney, Larry Turner, said Babik "intends to enter a plea in this case, thus obviating the need for a trial."

A new trial date for Babik has been set for May 3. Court records did not indicate that a change of plea hearing had been scheduled.

Babik was fired from his University of Florida job. He had hosted the "TailGator Pre-game Show" and the "Urban Meyer Post-Game Show" as well as reported from the sidelines during game broadcasts. He was the longtime network coordinator for UF athletics.

The University Athletic Association reported at the time that they were made aware of the investigation involving Babik last November and suspended him. Once he was charged, he was terminated.
