New York sports show to air in CharlotteCourtesy

(April 4, 2010) Could there possibly be a market for a sports-talk radio show that caters strictly to New York fans?
Chris Pardo, a rabid New York sports fan who moved here about 18 months ago, thinks so. "There's probably like half a million of us here," he says. Some days, it does seem like that. Pardo debuts today on WAVO-AM (1150, Rock Hill) and WTIX-AM (1410, Concord) with "New York Sports Talk," which will air Saturdays and Sundays, noon-2 p.m. If the name seems familiar, it's because Pardo is the son of Don Pardo, the longtime NBC personality who still works as the announcer on "Saturday Night Live" at age 92. When he was a kid, his father would take him to Rockefeller Plaza and let him run errands for the various shows he was working on. "I kind of grew up at NBC." Pardo has been promoting his new radio show for weeks, in somewhat unorthodox ways. "One simple one is, I go to the malls every day and wear my New York gear and I see people with anything New York on, and I approach them and give them a card with the show information on it." He's also posted information on local Internet fan sites for New York teams. Pardo, 70, who grew up in the New York area, worked in radio and the motion picture promotion business. He and his wife moved to Baxter Village in York County in 2008 to be near his son, who was transferred here with Wells Fargo. Whenever he would run into fellow New Yorkers, they'd get talking about sports and the lack of coverage of New York teams here. Shows on WFNZ-AM ("Fan" 610) rarely focus on New York teams unless there's a major development, he says. "I couldn't have picked a better weekend to start a show about New York sports - the Yankees start on Monday, Mets on Tuesday." Pardo says he splits his loyalties between the baseball teams and leans slightly toward the Giants in football because they've been around longer than the Jets. Greatest all-time Yankee? "Babe Ruth, no question," says Pardo, but he doesn't expect that to be true forever. "A-Rod - he's going to hit 800 home runs before he's done. He's going to blow them all away. He'll have all the stats, except maybe Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak." _______________________
