Honesty serves NBC's MIller wellCourtesy
Houston Chronicle
(April 2, 2010) All things being equal, Johnny Miller would just as soon spend next week as he would just as soon spend most weeks, which would involve fishing on his ranch in Idaho or anywhere else they're biting.Sunday night, however, Miller is flying from Houston, where he is calling the Shell Houston Open at Redstone Golf Club for NBC, to Augusta, Ga., to observe a feeding frenzy of another kind as Tiger Woods make his return to competitive golf at the Masters. “I'm going because I'm so interested in this whole phenomenon,” Miller said. “I want to see how the public deals with Tiger and all the things that will transpire and to see how Tiger handles the public and the press. “I hope he does a good job. I'm pulling for him, and I hope he makes good choices. He has the ability to be a good person, but you've got to have discipline. He has so much discipline with golf and working out and keeping in shape, but he wasn't too good in other areas.” Miller is operating on the “hate the sin, love the sinner” approach to life, since it's not that he hasn't had occasion to offend people on one level or another and find himself needing to make amends. Miller's honesty, however, always has been his strength — some, in fact, say he is too honest with his opinions about golf and golfers. Honesty, however, has ensured that he has managed to avoid many of life's potential boomerangs. “Life can be as messy and as complicated as you make it,” he said. “If you tell the truth and stay true to your wife and when you make mistakes you fess up and try to be nice to people, life is pretty easy. But if you break any of those rules of honesty, and fidelity is one of the biggest parts … you can get away with it for a while, but then it boomerangs, and boomerangs will make their turn.” NBC is on the air from Redstone from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Miller will be in the 18th tower with Dan Hicks. Gary Koch and Mark Rolfing are in the other towers, and Roger Maltbie and Dottie Pepper are course reporters, with Jimmy Roberts on interviews and features. _______________________
