(March 19, 2010) Steve Konrad, Program Director at AM 1500 The Sports Talk Station in Minneapolis, was in critical condition Thursday night after he hit a mattress on Interstate 94 in St. Paul and was thrown from his motorcycle, the State Patrol said.
The crash happened about 6 p.m. on eastbound I-94 at Western Avenue. The mattress, left or lost by another eastbound vehicle, was in the left-hand lane, State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske said. A 2007 Ford Expedition was able to swerve and miss the mattress, but the 2004 Yamaha hit it and crashed, Roeske said. Konrad, 46, was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. He was wearing a helmet, according to the State Patrol. The driver of the vehicle with the mattress was being sought Thursday night, Roeske said. The patrol also was investigating a fatal crash Thursday night on Hwy. 52 in Cannon Falls. No details were available from the patrol, but witness David Helms said a woman riding in a southbound car was killed after it crossed a median and into a northbound lane. _______________________
