(March 16, 2010) Baltimore Orioles fans who have struggled to hear games through static-filled radio signals will now hear the games in clear FM sound this season.
Pocomoke radio station WICO-FM will air all 162 Orioles regular season games live in 2010, starting with the team's April 6 opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. WICO-FM is one of six new stations added to the Orioles Radio Network. The network, headlined by flagship station 105.7 WJZ-FM in Baltimore, currently has 40 affiliates across Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington. "A 40-station network is something that you don't see in baseball," said Greg Bader, the Orioles' director of communications. "It's an indication that there is a market for Orioles baseball in the region." In addition to WICO-FM, Orioles' games will be broadcast on WTGM-AM and WJDY-AM in Salisbury, as well as stations WKHZ-AM and FM in Ocean City. In the past, Orioles games were often aired on AM stations, including WICO's AM counterpart on weekends, from 2006-08. Both stations are owned by Delmarva Broadcasting Company. "The Orioles have always been on weak signals in the heart of Delmarva," said Joe Edwards, operations manager of Delmarva Broadcasting Company. "We felt it would be better to have the games on a strong signal." Bader said while the 40 affiliates are the largest the Orioles Radio Network has had, there are hopes stations could be added in Delaware and North Carolina, areas in the Orioles' broadcast territory. "Some stations join as the season goes along," he said. "We're hopeful that by the time season is under way, we have new stations added as well." The changes in presentation of Orioles games will not only be limited to the radio end of broadcast. The Mid-Atlantic Sports Network, which airs all of the Orioles' television games, will now have all of the team's games in high-definition. Last year, only a portion of game for the Orioles and Washington Nationals, whose game also air on MASN, were broadcast in HD. _______________________
