Paul Finebaum show going national
(March 12, 2010) The Paul Finebaum Radio Network is going nationwide.

The Sirius XM Sports Nation satellite channel has picked up Finebaum's popular sports-talk show and should begin airing it as early as Monday afternoon, Finebaum said Thursday.

"I'm not saying we're going to knock out Howard Stern -- we're not," he said. "But we can definitely grow the audience and broaden it."

The Sirius XM satellite network's roster includes not only the shock-jock Stern but also shows hosted by nationally known sports opinion-makers such as Dan Patrick, Stephen A. Smith and partners Mike Green berg and Mike Golic.

Finebaum's show, which originates out of Birmingham's WJOX 94.5 FM and airs on more than 30 affiliates in five Southeastern states, will be simulcast on Sirius Channel 122 and XM Channel 143.

Both channels will carry all four hours of the show, which airs here from 2 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Although the show is going national, Fi nebaum said he plans to stick to the steady diet of Alabama, Auburn and SEC football issues that have made his show so popular in Birmingham and around the Southeast.

"We may broaden the show from time to time, but I think people like the show the way it is, and I really have no desire to change it," said Finebaum.

Pat Smith -- who, as director of the Paul Finebaum Radio Network, handled most of the negotiations with Sirius XM -- said the satellite network plans to use Finebaum's show to anchor its college sports package.

"They contacted me right after Alabama's national championship game and immedi ately wanted to pursue negotiations at landing us on the channel," Smith said.

"They are kind of revamping their whole college sports programming, and they wanted us to be a part of it."

Finebaum's deal with Sirius XM was fi nalized Thursday, WJOX program director Ryan Haney said.

Although financial terms were not avail able, Smith said it is a multi-year deal.
