Eskimos in no rush to hire new voice
(March 2, 2010) Have the Edmonton Eskimos and Corus Radio Stations pulled an end around, or are they simply delaying their play calling -- or in this case, play-by-play calling?

A source told The Journal that an announcement for the replacement of legendary play-by-play man Bryan Hall was expected early this week, prior to the Canadian Football League's annual congress, which hits Edmonton on Wednesday.

Syd Smith, program director at 630 CHED, which broadcasts the Eskimos games, said Monday afternoon that the announcement is not imminent.

"No change of plans. Had never set a specific date," he said through a text. "Have to hire someone first, then decide when to announce."

Among those in the running are current analyst Dave Campbell, Global TV's John Sexsmith and former Edmonton Oilers analyst Morley Scott, who is currently handling play-by-play duties and media relations with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League.

Sources say the Eskimos are backing Sexsmith, but the bottom line is the successful candidate will be a Corus employee and expected to handle other station duties, which should open the door for Campbell -- who is already on staff -- with Scott as his analyst, or vice versa.

The call to replace Hall may not be made until next week, after the congress leaves town.
