San Bernardino County Sun
(March 1, 2010) In the past 15 years, nothing about professional baseball in San Bernardino has been as reliable as Mike Saeger.

The California League franchise now known as the 66ers has gone through two name changes, two affiliation changes and one stadium change in 15 years.

Saeger has been the one broadcasting it all.

But now Saeger, 43, the voice of the franchise since 1995, is moving on; he's has accepted a position to broadcast games for the Double-A San Antonio Missions beginning this season.

The 66ers have hired an STAA client to replace Saeger. A formal announcement is pending.

"A lot of guys aren't getting Triple-A or major-league jobs out of Single-A," Saeger said. "I figured this is a chance to get Double-A on my resume and make me more attractive for Triple-A or big leagues. I'm not old, but I'm not super young, either."

Saeger, a Southern California native, will be broadcasting his 20th minor- league baseball season in 2010.

He was with Single-A Augusta for two years to start, then went to Single-A Vero Beach before moving to San Bernardino. Of those 19 years, 11 were spent broadcasting affiliates of the Dodgers, the team he grew up cheering. San Antonio is a San Diego Padres affiliate.

Saeger will be moving from one team principally owned by David Elmore to another.

"It helps going to another Elmore team," Saeger admitted.

Saeger said the San Antonio position opened when San Antonio broadcaster and STAA client Stu Paul got a job with Triple-A Nashville.

"They (Missions) said I had the best tape, which is good - I didn't want to just get it because of who recommended me," Saeger said.

Considered the "dean" of California League broadcasters, Saeger said it was a difficult decision for many reasons.

His wife, J'leen (whom he met when she worked for the team in San Bernardino), and 1-year-old daughter Ashlyn will be staying behind for most of the season, as J'leen finishes the year teaching at Loma Linda Academy and finishes her Ph.D. in contemporary Spanish literature at UC Riverside, before they join Saeger in San Antonio.

"I'll be back here when she walks for that," Saeger said.

"I am sad to be leaving my beloved San Bernardino," J'leen said. "But I know this is the next step that Saeger has to take for him to fulfill his dream."

The relationships Saeger built with people in the area over the years will also be difficult to leave behind.

"It's tough leaving the relationships with people, whether it's longtime clients or longtime fans; they're people you see every year," he said.

San Bernardino teams won five California League championships during Saeger's time.

Now he'll be going to a new league, but he said the transition won't be difficult.

"The level of baseball will be higher, but six of the eight teams (in the Texas League) have teams in the Cal League, so I'll already know a lot of the players," Saeger said.

Saeger said his last day with the Sixers should be in about a month.
