Padres reduce Jerry Coleman's schedule
(February 17, 2010) Jerry Coleman will be working less in 2010. But at times he’ll be working more, too.

As expected, the Padres broadcasting legend will work a smaller number of radio broadcasts this season — 25 home day games at Petco Park and 15 road games, according to a source familiar with the situation who asked not to be identified.

But on all the afternoon home games except the April 12 opener, Coleman will do color analysis for every inning. A year ago Coleman did four innings of color for every game. Once again he will work alongside Ted Leitner and Andy Masur.

Coleman will do color on the middle three innings of the home opener and his 15 road games. He will make the first road trip to Arizona and Colorado, and also travel to New York, where he played and worked for the Yankees, and twice to San Francisco, where he grew up.

“I’m the oldest broadcaster in baseball,” said the 85-year-old Coleman last night. “I’m lucky to have a job, to be honest.

“As far as I’m concerned, and I say this very candidly, whatever they want me to do, I will do. I didn’t even ask. I’m delighted to be alive and to be working.”

Coleman also will do color for at least the middle three innings on all spring training broadcasts.

Coleman began his Padres broadcasting career in 1972 and has worked every year since except 1980, when he managed the club. His role first was reduced when he gave up the No. 1 job and worked three innings of play-by-play and six innings of color for half the games in 2005 and ’06. The next two seasons he did one inning of play-by-play and three innings of color for every game.
