Sports host to play versus GlobetrottersCourtesy

(February 12, 2010) Here’s a sentence I never thought I’d write: John Kentera will play a couple of minutes tonight for the Washington Generals in their game against the Harlem Globetrotters at the Sports Arena.
I know, I thought he should be coaching, too, but Kentera said he first asked Red Klotz about doing this in 1980, as he was finishing his playing career at USIU. Klotz invited him to a tryout, but Kentera said his knees weren’t up to it. Now 51 and four-plus months removed from a heart attack, Kentera gets his chance tonight, thanks to some behind-the-scenes work by PR man extraordinaire Rick Schloss. “I feel great,” said Kentera, the XX Sports Radio nighttime host. “I’ve been working out three to five days a week. “I can’t believe I’m playing against the ’Trotters. It’ll be fun, a great experience. Everybody I’ve talked to, they think it’s the coolest thing to be able to do this.” I know one thing: Kentera won’t be shy about shooting. “All these guys who played with me at Torrey Pines have been on Facebook telling me, ‘You’re a gunner, you’ve got to go out and play,’ ” he said. “I’m wearing No. 00. I hope that’s not my scoring average.” _______________________
