Harwell honored for lifetime achievement
(February 11, 2010) Legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell will be honored this May with the Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports Broadcasting, presented annually by WFUV, a National Public Radio station broadcast out of Scully's alma mater, Fordham University.

Harwell, 92, spent more than 40 of his 55-year career on the air with the Detroit Tigers. He will be honored at the WFUV Radio Spring Gala on May 5 at Gotham Hall in New York.

Though Harwell's name and voice has become virtually synonymous with the Tigers, for whom he broadcast games from 1960-2002, he began his career back in 1946 as the radio voice of the Atlanta Crackers and also worked with the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants and Baltimore Orioles before heading to Detroit.

Harwell was awarded the Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award in 1981, and is also a member of the Radio Hall of Fame and Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame.

He becomes the third recipient of the Scully Award, named in honor of the Fordham alumni who received the inaugural award in 2008. Dick Enberg of CBS Sports won the award last year.
