Sports radio tough sell in Lincoln
(February 1, 2010) It's hard for me to believe that a sports talk station can't make it in Lincoln.

But apparently it can't, and that's why Three Eagles Communications dumped the format this week after 13 years at KLMS 1480 AM in favor of oldies music.

General manager Joy Patten told me Friday it was a financial decision, saying the station "wasn't being supported in the community."

I don't doubt that ESPN 1480 was tough sell, especially since its Arbitron ratings were all over the place.

After nearly disappearing in the spring 2009 survey, the station again posted great numbers this fall among its target audience of men ages 25 to 54. Nebraska football most likely had a lot to do with the surge.

The problem: You can only count on Husker football carrying a sports talk station for four, maybe five, months.

But a great local talk show can get you through the rest of the year. Omaha's 1620 The Zone has one in "Unsportsmanlike Conduct."

ESPN 1480 didn't.

I applaud Three Eagles for taking a chance with former Husker great Jason Peter. He gave them a name. The problem was, he didn't have any radio experience, and it showed.

So with no strong local show, fluctuating ratings and no local advertising to speak of, the station wasn't long for this world. So it goes.

KLMS released its talent lineup. The hosts are all syndicated, meaning you can hear him them at a variety of oldies stations around the country.

I found some of the same jocks at stations in such cities as Great Bend, Kan.; Merced, Calif., and Honolulu, to name a few. Here's the lineup:

5-10 a.m. - Bruce Chandler

10 a.m.-2 p.m. - JJ McKay

2-7 p.m. - Brad Pierce

7 p.m.-midnight - Peter McLaine

Midnight-5 a.m. - Art Crenshaw

As for local programming, the station will continue to carry Lincoln Stars hockey.

That will be it for a while.

Three Eagles is still trying to find a new home and time for "Nebraska Outdoors," which had aired Saturday morning on ESPN 1480.
